Rendered speaks through the model’s enforcement of commensurability between objects, places, people and things, a speech-world where stable definitions are replaced by the proximity between words and fragmented images.

A woman is selling a house that can't stay still.

Reflecting upon and made from generative video models, Rendered (A Woman is Selling the House) moves through three rendering passes with increasing fidelity. The real estate agent narrates these rooms through the alien logic of machines — itemizing herself as an amenity, matter-of-factly confirming a constantly shifting square footage, clear descriptions of endless hallways and odd adjacencies: her language describes the model as it invents “her” home.

As progressive visual renders become more photorealistic, what the presented films say about the house grows less true. The final render is both the most realistic and the least accurate.

Director’s Statement

Rendered resists locating subjectivity within the model. It speaks through the model’s enforcement of commensurability between objects, places, people and things, a speech-world where stable definitions are replaced by the proximity between words and fragmented images.

The writing process began inside that logic. I wanted to stay inside the structure designers have engineered to represent the world we live in, a form of automated interpretation that is harnessed into the production of images that speak through plausible commercial landscapes. This automation of empty subjectivity into new images haunts and fascinates me.

The film takes the form of a real-estate walkthrough: like generated video, a genre of commercial description and fantasy. It is rendered three times, moving from fragments to the low-res output of the autoencoder before the final pass. The image and speech becomes more plausible, but increasingly less true: image resolution and referentiality tear apart. By the final pass the render succeeds completely at erasing its traces, moving from the logic of the model to the logic of the observer. The title represents the process behind its construction: the film opens as a fantasy, a prompt: A Woman is Selling the House. It closes, corrected, in machinic terms: Rendered.
